Welcome to the Pink Singers!

by Lynne Nicholls
Chair
February 2007

Hello, I am Lynne, the elected chair of the choir and I am here to tell you a little bit more about the choir. The Pink Singers is London’s lesbian and gay community choir, launched on 7th April for London’s Gay Pride in 1983 and now the longest-running lesbian and gay choir in Europe. We will celebrate our 25th anniversary in 2008. For those of you interested in the choir’s history, please see our history page.

We are essentially a group of lesbian, gay and bisexual people who come from different backgrounds, countries, ethnicities, religions and generations who love to sing and socialise together. We are predominantly made up of lesbian and gay people but we do accept anyone who wishes to join us either as a singing or non-singing member. Although we do not audition members, we voice-check new members to see which section their voice is best suited to. If you feel you would like to join the choir, then please see our new members' page.

As a choir, we recently worked hard on producing a mission statement, to summarise who we are and what we try to achieve. For choir members’ insights and stories, see our past events page.

What do we aim to achieve?

  • To encourage and support the development of individual members’ skills.
  • To ensure that we continue to perform a varied repertoire.
  • To continue to improve our performance standard.
  • To provide a supportive, inclusive, relaxed and friendly environment where any form of bullying or harassment is not tolerated.
  • To play an active role in the UK, European amd global choral communities.
  • To provide performance opportunities throughout the UK and abroad on a regular basis.
  • To support LGBT and other community/charity organisations through performances.
  • To encourage members to take an active role in the running of the choir.
  • To financially support members, where possible, to attend events.
  • To increase our profile in the LGBT and wider communities.
  • To provide a positive image of the lesbian and gay community.

    How do we achieve this?

Some of the way we achieve our aims are listed below:

  • We give feedback on strengths and weakness when members are voice-checked.
  • We provide rehearsal music and rehearsal CDs to help with learning music.
  • We provide both sectional and full-choir rehearsals to help with learning music.
  • We encourage members to make arrangements for the choir to sing.
  • We encourage all members to give musical suggestions to ensure our repertoire is varied.
  • We encourage and provide opportunities for small groups and soloists.
  • We work with trained professionals to maintain our high musical and performance standards.
  • We encourage members to take part in social events organised by the choir.
  • Each section organises a fun social event each year.
  • We offer weekends away in the UK and trips abroad.
  • Each section has a section leader who represents that section at management meetings.
  • We do not tolerate bullying or harassment of our members.
  • We offer subsidies to enable all our members to attend performance trips.
  • We sing regularly with choirs in the UK and Europe.
  • We are active members of the UK and European LGBT choir networks.
  • We perform for many charities and organisations over the course of each year, which helps the charities raise awareness and funds.
  • We encourage all members to take an active role, whether it be designing posters or organising a concert.
  • Elected choir members run the choir and there are many ways in which all members can make suggestions.

If you have found this to be of interest and would like to join the choir, then why not look at our new members' page, or if you wish to book the choir for an event, see our small group page.

    Best wishes,

    Lynne

  • About Our Logo

    Our logo!

Our logo was designed by Dragan Lonchar in October 2002.

Dragan's design has "a deeper meaning - Yin-Yang, duality of life, polarities in nature, notes and shapes creating a 'P' and 'S'."

"We are a 'choir of a kind' uniting the 'impossible' - fags and dykes, with occasional female members who sing tenor and male members who sing alto, all being butch and camp at the same time - we all fit like a hand in a glove. Therefore the Yin-Yang inspiration - this symbol represents two sides of everything that belong together, just like the Pinkies. Only the Yin-Yang dots turned to musical notes because we use 'em!"
