What is RSS?

Really Simple Syndication
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and as its name suggests, is a very easy way for anyone to collect news content from a website. RSS allows you to see what's new in websites where there is constantly changing content, and lets you avoid the hassle of having to actually visit the website itself to check.

Convenience
An RSS feed is collected and displayed by a program called an RSS aggregator. Many web browsers come equipped with an aggregator, and most portals offer a free web-based aggregator, which allows you to create a page that collates news content from the sites you are interested in. You can then set this personalised web page as your home page, or access it from any internet-connected computer, allowing you to see the information you've selected in just one place.

Mobility
Aggregators are not only found on desktop computers, many PDAs and phones come with aggregators installed, so you can take automatically updated news content with you wherever you go. Out and about but unsure about the details of the next Pink Singers concert? Look up the Pink Singers News RSS on your mobile phone!

Try it now!
To see whether or not a website has an RSS feed, look for the orange logo. Have a look at our tutorial below on how to add the Pink Singers News RSS to your aggregator!

How do I get an RSS feed onto my mobile phone or PDA?

Before we begin, this tutorial presumes that you have a smartphone or PDA which is docked with your desktop. The two devices communicate through synchronization software which is already installed on the computer.

There are many different RSS aggregators for mobile devices like mobile phones and PDAs. The difficulty lies in finding an aggregator which will work for your device. In this example we will install Pinkies News onto a Pocket PC using AvantGo.

Step 1: Go to AvantGo and check that your device is supported

Click on the logo above to go to the AvantGo website.

Click on 'Get It Now' to proceed.

Click on the 'Device/System Requirements' option in the Getting Started menu box. This opens a window with a list of all compatible operating systems. Check that both your phone/PDA and computer are compatible with AvantGo. If it is, you can move to step 2, otherwise you will need to find some other feed aggregator for your device.

Step 2: Create an AvantGo account, download the software and install it

Click on 'Sign Up Now!' to set up your account.

This takes you through a series of pages of personal information which attempts to tailor the news channels to you. Click 'Continue' when you have filled in the boxes. You don't need to choose any channels at this point. This can be done later if you wish.

When you get to this page, select the operating system of your device. Please be careful because choosing the wrong operating system will mean the program just won't work!

Read the next page carefully and download the file.

Save the file to a place which you will remember.

Open the folder where you saved the file and double-click on it to run it.

This will begin the wizard to install the program on both your computer and your mobile device. Follow all instructions carefully. When you are done, return to the AvantGo website, and this time sign in with your username and password.

Step 3: Add the Pink Singers News RSS to AvantGo

To add the Pink Singers News RSS to your channels, click on 'Create An RSS Channel'.

The Channel URL can be seen by clicking on the orange RSS button on the right. Alternatively, just copy and paste

Then click 'Continue'.

The next page shows you some of the settings for the RSS feed, including how frequently the feed should be checked for updates. The default settings are fine. Click on 'Save Channel' to proceed.

The Pink Singers News channel should now be seen as a new channel. All you need to do now is synchronize your device.

Step 4: Synchronize your device and read the Pink Singers news!

The next time you connect your device, the AvantGo channels will be updated. Wait for synchronization to complete before accessing your device.

When synchronization is complete, run the AvantGo program on your device.

The home page lists all the channels you have subscribed to. Look for the Pink Singers News channel and click on it.

The Pink Singers News channel is opened with the headlines visible. Simply click on a headline to read the content.
