New Year concert, 'A Burst of Song', 8 January 2011
Chelsea’s Cadogan Hall will again play host to the Pink Singers, following the success of our first concert in this fabulous venue in the summer. Saturday 8 January 2011 is the date for our New Year concert, ‘A Burst of Song’. It starts at 7.30 pm.
You’ll be able to soak in a range of styles and moods, from Gabriel Fauré’s beautiful Cantique de Jean Racine – written when he was just 19 in 1865 – to Billy Joel’s 1983 ballad And so it goes. We are sure you’ll give a warm welcome to our guests, the Manchester Lesbian & Gay Chorus.
Tickets cost from £10 to £30 – with a range of special offers.
- Groups save £3 on each ticket. Just order five or more full price tickets in one lot. So if you get together with friends and family and buy five tickets, you save £15. A group of eight saves £24.
- Encore members (friends of Cadogan Hall) save £3 on £22 and £18 tickets.
- Are you 60 or over, or 16 or under? You can save £3 on every full price ticket.
- Full-time students (with student ID) and the unemployed can get the same £3 discount.

Various Voices 2014 – now in Dublin!
The World Cup may well be in Rio that year but the real heat will be elsewhere… It is with great pleasure that we can now confirm that the next Various Voices festival will take place in Dublin in 2014, hosted by our friends Glória LGBT choir.
Various Voices is a very important event, allowing gay and lesbian choirs from all over Europe and the world to meet and sing together, promote both musical and queer culture, and have a good time! The Pink Singers have taken part in every single ‘VV’, and this one will be a wonderful occasion to reinforce the ties with our fellow islanders and all our friends from Legato, the association of European gay and lesbian choirs and the organization behind Various Voices.

Why I will be at the London Vigil Against Hate Crime
I’ve lived a fairly sheltered life as a lesbian. No overt homophobia, I wasn’t bullied at school but then I didn’t know about gays and lesbians until I was in my 20’s and at drama school and it wasn’t until a little later that I realised that lesbianism explained my feelings towards women and not towards men. I never felt there was something wrong with me and have always lived my life as an “out” lesbian and been accepted as such by colleagues and family. Clearly this is not the case with many of my friends and last year I was brought face to face with a monstrous hate crime when various news reports told us of the death of Ian Baynham who was attacked in Trafalgar Square whilst out celebrating.
Even if I’d not been a member of the Pink Singers I’d have attended the vigil that night but being able to be an active participant gave me a huge sense of community and a feeling that I was helping to make a stand to say enough is enough. Singers came from many of the lesbian and gay communities around the country, not just London and we all joined together with one voice to sing for Ian and all our brothers and sisters who have experienced hatred and persecution around the world. Unless you’ve spent your waking hours under a rock the last few weeks, you will have noticed several videos on YouTube bearing the tag “It Gets Better”. The It Gets Better project is the brainchild of Dan Savage, who noticed that in the last month several bullied gay teenagers have taken their own lives. These children are often isolated and have no-one to turn to: their teachers may be uninterested, their parents may be unhearing and their friends may be uncaring. That’s why he started this project: to encourage ordinary people to let these young men and women know that no matter how dark it may seem, things will work out right, and happiness is just round the corner. It gets better.
Yesterday some of the Pink Singers got together to record a little video as our choir’s contribution to this project, and you can see it here.
We are the Pink Singers, and we’re here to say, “It gets better!”
